Opportunistic

Yesterday morning, I was excited to find one of my Pincusion Cactus in full bloom! Instead of the solid pink petals that I’m used to seeing, though, this one had white stripes. I’ve seen this pattern before and always wondered so I wrote my botanist guru, Steve Jones. He confirmed that they are indeed the same species as my other…..Graham’s Pincushion. I also asked for the reason they are blooming so much more than last year and here’s his response: ”

They flower any time they get water – seems to me that within a week of any good rainfall from April to September I start to see flowers. They’re opportunistic – they flower like ocotillos leaf out, in response to rain. The ASDM manual has this note (very bottom of the page):

“The flowers can be used as a monsoon season rain gauge. The buds are produced during the preceding summer growing season and usually remain dormant through the winter, spring, and foresummer. The buds burst into bloom 5 days after the first rain of the summer and last about a week. Plants produce a second and sometimes a third flush of flowers after subsequent rains.”

We haven’t been getting the rain the rest of the valley has been getting but I do give them supplemental water so that explains the blooms!

Droid Camera

I held out as long as I could but I finally got a smartphone. It’s mostly for internet at campgrounds with no wireless but I thought it might be a decent pocket camera too. I tried Macro mode first and it’s not bad! Here’s a shot of new growth on a baby Saguaro.

Stealth

Walking the cart path of the golf course, we encounter a lot of Desert Cottontails nibbling on the fairways. What’s hysterical is how they go into stealth mode as we approach…I guess thinking we can’t see them 🙂

Mule Deer

Mule Deer are often seen in our neighborhood, especially in the summer, so when we started our hike this morning, I hoped we’d encounter one. This one bounded away when it heard us coming but then stopped just long enough to get one shot. It’s tough to hold the camera still at maximum zoom with my compact but I got my photo of the day 🙂

(Edited on my laptop so this might be darker than it should be)

Dainty Sulphur

I saw a lot of Dainy Sulphur butterflies in my yard last week so I thought I’d post a shot of one I took last month. Their name is perfect! As I’ve mentioned, I never noticed these tiny guys before I joined my butterfly group.

For this image, I used a Canon 300mm lens. ISO 400, 1/1250 sec at f/4. In case you’re wondering, the reason I used such a fast shutterspeed is because I typically shoot hand held and I can’t hold the camera/lens as still as I used to!

White Winged Dove

Along with bats and bees, the White Winged Dove plays a significant role in pollinating our Saguaro blooms. They also LOVE sipping nectar from the blossoms and eating the fruit so we’ve been hearing them COO from the time the buds show up until the last fruit fell about a week ago. With their favorite food source dwindling, there are less and less of them around now.

Cool Thoughts

When it gets really hot, reviewing my archived water images leads to cool and refreshing thoughts of upcoming trips to places with streams and waterfalls…ahhhh. Mind over matter, right?! This image of a Mallard breaking up fall color reflections was taken last October on the West Fork Trail. One shot and the duck flew away. At first I almost deleted the image because it was kind of in between abstract and sharp but the more I look at it, the more I like it.

Desert Columbine

Desert Columbine is about half the size of the more common Yellow Columbine we see here at higher elevations. I captured this one at the Flagstaff Arboretum. It is my favorite composition of this plant so far but the exposure wasn’t very good so I used Photoshop to “art it up” a little. The texture in the background is made up of three images I shot of the sidewalk and curb at Hermit’s Rest (Grand Canyon) while I was waiting for the bus. I ended up with about 20 great textures during that wait!
