Even during summer, I do A LOT of hiking in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve (starting before sunrise). Several new trails opened this year giving us access into some really interesting places. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve now encompasses over 27,000 acres and more land is set to be preserved. The north area of the Preserve is my favorite not only because the area is very close to home but because of the amazing terrain and rock formations! Following are some photos from my favorite trails. Read more
I’m back in Flagstaff but I’m not going to post anything from here until I catch up! So I will divide the rest of September into 3 posts starting with the wonderful rains we received early this month. Lots of rain is needed for Fungi to pop up in the Desert and we received both! Read more
This year, I delayed my trip because of my Echinopsis. One of them had over 40 flower buds and seemed ready to bloom any day! How could I leave during what might be the biggest show I’ve had since planting them! Read more
This last week, we experienced the hottest temperatures since living here and, in fact, some areas set new records! Before you feel sorry for us, though, know that although we would prefer it not get this hot, we all know how to deal with the heat. You can tell who are locals because they are the ones standing in the shade of ANYTHING. Read more
Yesterday morning, I hiked around Cone Mountain and Browns Mountain….an 8 mile loop. It was a spectacular day! I’m posting mostly to Google Plus these days so please visit to see more of my images. CLICK HERE to go to my albums and then click “view all of Marianne’s albums”. I plan to get back in the habit of posting here soon. I have lots of MSC field institute images to share.
This female Gilded Flicker was so engrossed in eating she didn’t mind me moving in for a closer look. I noticed she had a crooked beak but it didn’t seem to hinder her eating. Call me crazy but I love sticking my camera out my SUV window and shooting while driving. Jack Davis (artist and digital guru) was the first one I saw do this back about 2003 and I was instantly intrigued. I don’t always get something worthwhile but occasionally I get something I love. This was one of those times. I added to the left side of the image and I printed this on a large canvas and it looks great! I love the painterly look.
Taken from my office window early this morning. When we get snow, photographers run for the desert just North of Phoenix to get photos of snow on cactus 🙂
