Volunteer

A plant coming up in your yard (or anywhere) is often called a “volunteer”. This one is a beauty (to me anyway) with tiny 1/4 inch translucent cream colored flowers that appear along the stems at every leaf location. I put down topsoil during my landscaping project and hoped I would have some interesting plants pop up so I was happy to see it. I have no idea what it is but as soon as I find out, I will edit this post.

UPDATE: Unfortunately, it’s Russian Thistle. See comment below.

  1. Bad news….I just heard from my botanist friend, Steve Jones, and he identified it as Tumbleweed. Here’s his full description:
    ===================
    Beautiful, but that’s a tumbleweed. Russian thistle. Salsola tragus. By any other name, a non-native and invasive little feller. Big feller, sorry. In west Texas, those thing would run four feet high and six feet across, and blow in the spring and fall winds, distributing thousands and thousands of winged seeds, and forming huge drifts up against fences. Dr. Jones’s prescription would be to yank it, but that’s up to you. You can always wait until its seed ripens, then get it out of there. Unless you want more…
    Those leaf tips are mighty uncomfortable, too.
    Anyway, I love the close-up photo – the venation in the fruit wings is lovely! As is the little tinge of pink.

    Sorry for the diagnosis, but there it is
