Monsoon Sunrises

Saguaro Silhouette at Sunrise

Being a “Morning Person”, I love summers in Arizona! It is the only time of day cool enough to get anything done and I relish every hour. I do long hikes at least 4 times a week and in Summer I’m always up before the sun. Of course I am never without a camera in hand so I get lots of sunrise shots. On the other hand, I get very few sunsets. I’m ready for bed by that time 🙂

Following are sunrises from the past few days. You might be interested to know these were taken with either my smartphone or a very small compact camera! The image files from these devices are good enough for 11×14 inch prints and larger in some cases. In fact, the image quality and performance at high ISOs from the latest phones and compacts is SO good that I rarely carry my DSLR anymore. My hiking camera arsenal consists of my smartphone, a Canon Powershot N and a Canon Powershot SX50. All 3 together weigh less than my DSLR so you can imagine it’s been extremely liberating! Without further ado, here are my sunrises from the Preserve.

  1. These are really cool! My favourite is the 2nd one.

I’m feeling all frazzled after a hot, for us, day (a whole 83F)! You’d probably be in your winter woolies if you were here! I must take a leaf out of your book and get outside earlier in the morning…. 🙂

    • Thank you, Mandy! I really love the grasses silhouette too. I know your feeling SO well and feel your discomfort. Yes…early mornings are essential to me or I wouldn’t have any fun. I’m really lucky my body clock won’t change 🙂 Anyway…we were out of the door at 4:30 am this morning and it takes just 10 min to get to our favorite higher elevation trails so we enjoyed a relatively cool morning (48C). Light clouds kept the eventual sun diffused so it was an altogether excellent morning! I posted a couple of shots on Instagram as did my S.O. Here are both addresses. Christopher is an Obstacle Racing professional/motivator/trainer so be prepared to see lots of bare chest shots 🙂
