Desert Columbine

Desert Columbine is about half the size of the more common Yellow Columbine we see here at higher elevations. I captured this one at the Flagstaff Arboretum. It is my favorite composition of this plant so far but the exposure wasn’t very good so I used Photoshop to “art it up” a little. The texture in the background is made up of three images I shot of the sidewalk and curb at Hermit’s Rest (Grand Canyon) while I was waiting for the bus. I ended up with about 20 great textures during that wait!

  1. Beautiful leftward movement. But — ha! — I keep seeing a praying mantis wearing a fancy hat! Think I’ll go back to bed now … –Carol Leigh

Beautiful, Marianne. Background is unique but it must have been difficult (or very easy) to switch backgrounds.

  3. Thanks guys!

Howard….opacity, blend modes and masking do take a little time but the process is so much fun! I learned it from Katrin Eismann years ago. Someone else just as good is Carol Leigh who commented just before you. Checkout her online montaging course. It’s right up your alley!

  4. My first (and lasting) impression was that of an illustration in a botanical book. I like it very much. This whole notion of photos-into-art holds a great deal of appeal these days. 🙂

Who said you can’t turn a pig’s ear into a silk purse?! Kidding! But really, your photoshop fix-up is absolutely beautiful!
