Covering the Bases

An invaluable rule for photographers is to look up, down, all around and when they’ve done that, turn back in the opposite direction of where they’re shooting. I don’t always remember the last part when a trail is steep and difficult. I tend to forge ahead to reach my destination and only photograph scenes in front of me. But this time, I had the rule in mind and came away with two different compositions of this waterfall. Black and White thanks to Topaz B&W Effects. (Emerald Pools Trail, Zion National Park)

Virgin River Reflections

You don’t need much water for reflections. Virgin River in Zion National Park.

Watchman Textured

This week, The Digital Photography School posted a helpful tutorial on how to add textures to your images. CLICK HERE. Adding textures is really easy in either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (I recommend version 9) and although it can be trial and error, it’s always fun.

It reminded me of an image from last October of the Watchman and Virgin River in Zion National Park. Because it was an extremely overcast day, a straight photo would have been disappointing so I visualized the scene with added textures and shot it with that purpose in mind. I’m really happy with the result!

Cottonwood Roots

We encountered this magnificent Cottonwood tree along the trail to Lower Pine Creek Falls in Zion. It’s very close to the creek so the roots are being bared a little more each time it overflows making the tree twist and turn to survive. Richard and I stopped and photographed it for quite awhile making Chris wonder what happened to us 🙂

Taken with my Canon 10-22m lens which can produce great wide angle macros.

Cottonwoods

I captured this amazing Cottonwood scene in the fall of 2001. It was our second trip to Canyonlands but the first in the fall and boy did we hit a good year. Besides the trees, the shrubbery really caught my eye because it was also surprisingly colorful. We’ve been back several times in the fall and I always check on this area but it has never looked this amazing.

Shot with Minolta Dimage 7 (my first digital)

Soft Water

It was overcast for much of our time in Zion National Park but there was just enough light to make the muddy Virgin River and rocks glow with the reflection of fall colors.

Canon 180 Macro, ISO 100, f/32, 1 second.

Sand Ripples

We were really lucky to arrive in Zion during stormy weather. It meant we would have fresh sand ripples to photograph after the washes stopped flowing and there were some very interesting ones! I especially liked these as they reminded me of Fyords. The fall color reflection was a huge bonus.

Lower Pine Creek Falls Zion

Our friend Richard has been coming to Zion for years but had never seen the falls so we decided to re-visit before we left. No complaints from me especially since I regretted not capturing a side view of the falls. Didn’t get wet this time, thanks to Chris 🙂
