Tree Fungus

A hiker stopped as I was photographing this Fungus on the Viet Springs Trail this morning and he asked if I knew what kind it was. I replied I had no clue! I did a little research and came to realize I will have to continue to call them just Fungus 🙂

Dust Storm Sunset

I remembered yesterday that I did get one shot of our monster dust storm! The sun actually managed to get through the dust lighting up this tree. Eerie! Dust was still blowing hard so I took the photo from the safety of the garage. I knew the scene probably wouldn’t last long so I didn’t take the time to get my tripod. I set my ISO to 800 and fired off a few shots. This had the most in focus. Canon 7D with 24-70mm lens. 1/50th sec at f/5.

Hosing Everything Down

My car window shows the amount of dirt and sand Tuesday’s monster dust storm left behind. A rainstorm typically follows dust storms but not this time so I spent this morning hosing everything down. And I mean EVERYTHING! Not just the normal things like the car, patio, etc, but I also hosed down the plants, trees, and even my rocks 🙂

Unfortunately, I didn’t get any photos of this recording breaking Haboob! Neither the TV or radio was on or I would have rushed down to see it! But…we had just returned from a road trip and I was busy unpacking, downloading photos, etc. I saw the storm coming, of course, but because we’re 1000 feet higher than the valley, we don’t see them rolling in. We just get enveloped. I quickly realized it was bigger than any we had experienced since moving here but had no idea just how large it was. In case you missed it, here’s a link to a local newscast: http://www.youtube.com/user/pphh97

Arizona Rose

I encountered two wild roses while in Flagstaff. Fendler’s or Wood’s Rose which is a paler pink and Arizona Rose (pictured). According to Epple’s Plants of Arizona, they like different environments. The Arizona Rose grows along streams or in small clearings in Ponderosa Pine Forests which was exactly where I found it. I was on the Schultz Creek trail following the creek. The Fendler’s on the other hand, likes Roadsides, slopes and large clearings. I found it in a wide open meadow at Aspen Corner. There were quite a few of both so look for them if you’re in Flagstaff area any time soon!

Schultz Creek

Only a few wildflowers out along the Schultz Creek Trail but there were lots of butterflies! This little Blue (don’t know exact species) was enjoying a drink from a Sneezeweed flower. Captured with my Canon 70-200mm with a 1.4x extension tube.

Aspen Corner

There are several photo-worthy and easy trails right off Snowbowl Road including Aspen Corner. Not too many wildflowers right now so I opted to play with light and the trees by moving my camera during exposure.

Morning Face

I pass this spot almost every day on my morning walks but I had never noticed this Saguaro. Lighting is key to seeing faces in the desert and I was out a little earlier than usual yesterday OR he might just have moved into the neighborhood 🙂

Elephant Head

These Elephant Head are (hands down) the coolest wildflowers I encountered on my 2003 trip to Colorado. I’ll definitely be looking for them again but we might be too early. I’m sure there will be plenty to photograph, though 🙂
