Peniocereus greggii

Arizona Queen of the Night is our most illusive flowering cactus. The majority of the time, it looks like dead sticks so they are almost impossible to spot. During my many hikes and also while surveying flora in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve , I have found several specimens. It’s been extremely dry so a portion of this one has already become dehydrated but, as you can see, there are several buds so I’m hopeful. Although they start blooming at night, the flowers can last til early morning as evidenced by a friend who captured one during the early morning at Tohono Chul Park in Tucson.

Beware of Cholla

New hikers to our area are first and foremost warned to stay away from Cholla.
Cholla creatures seem to give warnings too 🙂

Droidx Sunrise

Sunrise captured with my Droidx on my walk this morning.
(Preset to shoot Black and White).

Echinopsis Hybrid Round Two

My Echinopsis Torch cactus continues to bloom and yesterday morning, four more large showy flowers appeared. I haven’t played in Photoshop for awhile so here is a creation resulting from multiple filters. The two filters that contributed most to this look are Topaz Detail (Lithograph) and Redfield Fractalius. I started with presets but then created custom settings for each filter.

Saguaro Cactus Blooms

With all the other cactus putting on such a good show this year, I am surprised our Saguaros are not as full of blooms as past years. Another thing I’ve noticed is a lower population of bees. This image was captured a few years ago.

Echinopsis Hybrid

Yesterday morning, I could hardly wait to check on my hybrid Echninopsis (aka Torch Cactus) and it did not disappoint! The color of this cactus is really incredible and an overcast morning made it really pop. There are more buds so I get to enjoy another round of blooms in a few days. Almost makes up for no wildflowers…..almost 🙂

Echinopsis Surprise

I thought my cactus were through blooming but all my Echinopsis in Javelina Cafe are loaded with fat buds! The first bloom appeared yesterday morning on this Echinopsis candicans. There’s a good chance my two hybrids will be full of blooms next. I can hardly wait!

Converted to Black and White and a little color brought back.

Bug Eggs

This is the time of year to be looking for bugs and bug eggs….if that interests you, of course! These eggs were along a spine of my Christmas Cholla which should tell you how small they are. I only noticed them because I was using a Macro lens with an extension tube. (I was hand holding so they aren’t very sharp). Click on BUGGUIDE to see hundreds of insect egg photos. I found a couple that looked similar (Stink Bug) but I have no clue. Looking at all the eggs makes me want to find more!
