My Hummer Buddies

Hummingbirds are very curious and boy are they fearless! Within minutes of going out to photograph in my yard, there will be a Hummer inches of my head and flitting around me for a few seconds as if to be checking me out. I think they like my hat 🙂 Whatever the reason, I love it. That particular morning, I was experimenting taking photos of cactus blooms with my 300mm lens. Right next to the cactus is an Aloe and almost the instant I started to shoot, this guy came in and started feeding. Unfortunately, my 300mm lens only focuses to 3 feet which meant I had to back up to take its photo…hence no tail.
Captured May 1st with 300mm lens. ISO 400, 1/600th sec at f/5

Memorial Day 2011

A quick and simple montage of three images to represent this day.

Echinopsis Hybrid Round Two

My Echinopsis Torch cactus continues to bloom and yesterday morning, four more large showy flowers appeared. I haven’t played in Photoshop for awhile so here is a creation resulting from multiple filters. The two filters that contributed most to this look are Topaz Detail (Lithograph) and Redfield Fractalius. I started with presets but then created custom settings for each filter.

Saguaro Cactus Blooms

With all the other cactus putting on such a good show this year, I am surprised our Saguaros are not as full of blooms as past years. Another thing I’ve noticed is a lower population of bees. This image was captured a few years ago.

Street Photography

My Droidx is my camera of choice on morning walks and I’ve been having fun with one of my photo apps (Vignette) which allows photos to be taken in a filmstrip format (4 images each). I combined 3 of these filmstrips for today’s post. It’s my version of Street Photography 🙂

The Morning After

I was really looking forward to seeing this Echinopsis full of red blooms but it was not to be. Steve (flora expert friend) had told me that Javelina weren’t the only ones who love to eat flowers and buds and I got first hand proof last week. The fence keeps the Javelina out but Pack Rats and Mice can get through easily. I’m disappointed but at least they left me one bloom 🙂

Greasewood Flat Entrance

Another infrared shot from our meetup at Reata Pass a couple of weeks ago. Canon 5D IR converted. Canon 70-200mm @ 85mm.Sepia tone added.

Northern White Skipper

This Northern White Skipper was too busy drinking to be bothered by my lens in his face.
