Hedgehog on Sunrise Trail

I led a Wildflower/Photography hike yesterday morning on the Sunrise Trail. No wildflowers to speak of, unfortunately, but we did see two Hedgehogs in bloom which made everyone’s day! All along the trail, every Hedgehog we came across was loaded with buds so there is bound to be a spectacular show in the next week or so. (Captured with my trusty Canon SX1)

Brittlebush

We can always count on Brittlebush to give us flowers. The blurred background was achieved by setting my Canon 180mm Macro lens to f/5.6. It was one of the rare occasions when I used a tripod 🙂

No Poppies in Sight Yet

There’s a glimmer of hope here and there but it’s beginning to look like our recent snow and late frost might have knocked all the little wildflowers back down 🙁

(A favorite Poppy image from a good year.)

First Sighting

Besides finding the Queen of the Night, we also saw our first Poppy on Monday! It was really tiny but I spotted a few more so let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for a big show!

Spring has Sprung-maybe

Storksbill Filaree is one of the first wildflowers to appear in the Spring and we’re seeing a lot of it up in the North Access area of the Mcdowell Sonoran Preserve. However, it’s appearance could just be the result of our extra warm Winter so I’m not giving official notice yet. Barring a hard frost, though, it does look like we might be in for a good Spring Bloom!

Fleabane

Fleabane (a member of the Aster family) got its name from a reputation of killing or driving away fleas. That’s good to know but the plant is few and far between so since I haven’t seen a flea in almost 17 years, there must be something else here in Arizona they don’t like! (Blended with a couple of textures.)

Retro Sunflowers and Mailboxes

STOP! Back up! That’s what I yelled at Chris when I saw these mailboxes. I could have spent all morning shooting this scene but there were 3 very unfriendly dogs who became aggressive every time I got out of the car so my visions of multiple angle views didn’t happen. I need to work on becoming braver 🙂

I added a cloud image and 3 images of texture then blended the heck out them all to create the look of an old photo.

Flagstaff Sunflowers

If you missed getting to Flagstaff this past month, you missed the best show of Sunflowers in at least 10 years, they say. Here’s an HDR shot of one field early in the morning. I was lucky to have almost no wind.
