On a recent hike, I came across a mother Owl with 3 Owlets. What a treat! Only one of the babies was turned toward me but I could see the other two moving. I was carrying my Canon Compact camera that day and thought it did a great job considering how far away I was.

An infrared capture from the Spring of 2008. What caught my eye first in this scene was the huge Chainfruit Cholla Skeleton (fire). I positioned myself low in order to include Poppies in the foreground and a nice Saguaro specimen in the background.(False color introduced by swapping channels.)

There was just a sliver of sunset left by the time I was finally motivated to capture it. I decided to move my camera during exposure and I ended up with a liquid sunset.

The boulders in and around the Marcus Landslide trail are humongous! Just compare these with the Paloverde and the giant Saguaro growing among them. Construction on a new North Access parking lot starts soon and this trail is expected to be officially opened in the Spring of 2012. Because it is relatively easy hiking with spectacular views of the Superstitions and Mazatzals and has incredible geology, I predict it will be one of the most popular trails in the Preserve.

This is a great time of year to capture silhouettes at sunrise because you don’t have to get up very early. Then even if you’re not lucky enough to have a willing subject, you can always count on the Saguaros!

This past Sunday, I assisted MSC Steward Dave Lorenz on his “Life of a Saguaro” hike. As we were leaving one of his lecture stops, I spotted a possible framing opportunity in these two giant Saguaro. Having a camera with an articulating screen (Canon SX1) allowed me to hold the camera at arms length and and yet still be able to line up the Saguaro in the distance. I then just waited for the hikers to go by and fired off several frames. Cool!

I see creatures in Saguaro scars and this one called to me on my walk this morning 🙂
