Field Institute

The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy now has a Field Institute and today was the first day for many members, including me, to collect flora specimens. The goal of the Institute is to document the flora in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve during the next 3 years. Besides being fun, this Flora Survey will be a great opportunity to gain some botanical knowledge. Front and center (holding White RatanBursage) is our fearless leader; botanist Steve Jones.

Photo Exhibit Ends Soon

This is the last weekend for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy’s photo exhibit at Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts. The last day is Feb 16. Hope you got to see it but if not, here is a very quick view of all the images. CLICK HERE to go to YouTube video.

Mylonite

Went on an excellent geology hike yesterday led by MSC Steward Dan Gruber. The McDowell Mountains have a wide variety of rock formations and learning about them was fascinating. I probably won’t remember everything Dan shared but one type of rock that made a strong impression was MYLONITE. I’ve seen this kind of rock often and always wondered about it so now I and the 20+ others along on the educational hike will probably never forget it. Thanks Dan!

Balanced Rock

MSC hike to Balanced Rock, State Trust Land (now Preserve!)
An appropriate name…no? Personally…I think it looks like a giant molar 🙂 (captured Oct 2007 with Infrared converted Canon Powershot S3)
