Candy Barrel Cactus

Be on the lookout for rings of Candy Barrel Cactus blooms! I noticed buds on mine last week and I saw the first bloom yesterday. I have three colors…red, salmon and yellow and when they’re in full bloom, they are spectacular. If you want to find lots of these cactus blooming in one place, check out Sabino Canyon in Tucson this week and next. DroidX photo with effect that darkened everything but the flower. Cool!

Droid Camera

I held out as long as I could but I finally got a smartphone. It’s mostly for internet at campgrounds with no wireless but I thought it might be a decent pocket camera too. I tried Macro mode first and it’s not bad! Here’s a shot of new growth on a baby Saguaro.

Dainty Sulphur

I saw a lot of Dainy Sulphur butterflies in my yard last week so I thought I’d post a shot of one I took last month. Their name is perfect! As I’ve mentioned, I never noticed these tiny guys before I joined my butterfly group.

For this image, I used a Canon 300mm lens. ISO 400, 1/1250 sec at f/4. In case you’re wondering, the reason I used such a fast shutterspeed is because I typically shoot hand held and I can’t hold the camera/lens as still as I used to!

Weed Seeds

I’m not positive what flower this was but it looks like a Dandelion. Whatever it is, I could have spent an hour or more photographing it! I’m typically with others, though, and have to grab a quick shot. I was fortunate to have a mass of yellow flowers behind this one which really sets it off. (Captured with the Canon 24-105mm lens at 60mm. ISO 400. 500th sec @f/5.0).
