Geology

I’m absolutely fascinated with the geology of our area and have been learning a little while collecting geology related photos for an up-coming MSC field guide. The top of Browns Mountain (in the background) is made up of volcanic rock from ancient lava flows. While looking for a good photo of the basalt all over the ground around the mountain, this odd depression caught my eye. Marianne Scenarian (as I’m sometimes called) pictures a lava bubble coming to the surface. Gotta ask about it 🙂

Xenolith

A xenolith (Ancient Greek meaning “foreign rock”) is a rock fragment which becomes enveloped in a larger rock during hardening. I captured this great xenolith in the Marcus Landslide area yesterday. Hope I can remember this location (forgot my GPS) so I can catch the Hedgehog and Brittlebush in bloom. What a scene that would be!

Mylonite

Went on an excellent geology hike yesterday led by MSC Steward Dan Gruber. The McDowell Mountains have a wide variety of rock formations and learning about them was fascinating. I probably won’t remember everything Dan shared but one type of rock that made a strong impression was MYLONITE. I’ve seen this kind of rock often and always wondered about it so now I and the 20+ others along on the educational hike will probably never forget it. Thanks Dan!
