Wildflower-Photography Walk

Yesterday, along with botanical expert Steve Jones, I led a Photography/Wildflower walk to Brown’s Ranch. Not many flowers to see this year so this Desert Holly (Acourtia nana) was a real treat. My wide angle lens was almost touching the plant which makes it look larger than it is but in reality, they’re so tiny, they are almost impossible to spot unless you know what you’re looking for.

Desert Holly

Lots of Desert Holly (Acourtia nana) is surfacing on the Brown’s Ranch trail. This photo makes them look to be easy to find but they are TINY! Although they can reach 8 inches tall, they are typically much smaller in our area. The leaves we’re seeing are only a couple of inches tall. The flowers are especially difficult to see so…if you hike the trail in the next few days, look very closely on the sides of the trail….especially beneath Creosote or trees.

Ranch History

Cattle Ranching is another fascinating part of our history here. Here’s a remnant from Browns Ranch. (Color image with added texture and color tinting to give an aged look.)

Geology

I’m absolutely fascinated with the geology of our area and have been learning a little while collecting geology related photos for an up-coming MSC field guide. The top of Browns Mountain (in the background) is made up of volcanic rock from ancient lava flows. While looking for a good photo of the basalt all over the ground around the mountain, this odd depression caught my eye. Marianne Scenarian (as I’m sometimes called) pictures a lava bubble coming to the surface. Gotta ask about it 🙂

Ready? Set? SNOW!

I’m SO excited at the prospect of snow tomorrow night! The last time we had a couple of inches (in our area) that stayed long enough to photograph was in December 1998 which is when this image was taken. (scanned from slide) If we’re lucky enough to get this much again, I’m going to try to duplicate this image. The bad news is that all the plants that have spring up in the warmth of the past month are going to get knocked back down 🙁
