Sonoran Storm

We’ve had two great days of rain in the last week so I’ve had to dodge raindrops to get a photo for the day. Black/White by Topaz Labs.

Black Tailed Gnatcatcher

I assisted on an MSC Birding hike in the Preserve yesterday (Sunday) with fellow steward Phil H. who knows most all of the birds in our area. Lucky us! The hike started out with NO birds which seemed strange because there was no wind and it wasn’t as cold as it had been. On the way back, though, Phil brought out his iPhone to let us hear what certain birds sound like and low and behold, we started seeing birds! This was my first sighting of a Black Tailed Gnatcatcher (must be a female or a juvenile). My lens only went to 100mm so this is a VERY tight crop and I was pleasantly surprised to see I caught the bird singing. He was more than likely responding to Phil’s iPhone app 🙂

Roadrunner Food?

That’s what I wondered as I rounded the corner of my house this evening and saw a Roadrunner in front of a Desert Milkweed where I had spotted 6 Queen caterpillars this morning. There were only two left! Darn 🙁 I then wondered if that might have been what happened to the Chrysalis recently and to the other two caterpillars. Note to self….make some kind of screen to go over the plants as soon as I spot the caterpillars or I might never get to document the process. (shot handheld with my Canon 180 Macro)

Greasewood Flat

I’m lucky to have a lot of interesting photo ops within a few miles. Greasewood Flat is one of my favorites. There’s lots of old rusty stuff to shoot and they love visitors. Great hamburgers too! Be sure to add a slice of prickly pear cactus if you order one.

Halloween Creation

A dead tree, two owls and some texture combined to make a Halloween inspired image.

Toms Thumb Trail Hike

First Conservancy hike of the season in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Our destination was East End Junction but the weather was so fabulous, we continued on to Tom’s Thumb. Elevation gain: 800ft in about 2 miles. In other words…steep!

Rainy Days

We have very few rainy days here so when one comes along, I enjoy every moment 🙂

Sacred Datura

We had a wonderful rain last night; temps dropped more than 10 degrees and we’re told cool temps are here to stay. Fall has begun! Oh Happy Day 🙂

Sacred Datura spotted this morning and shot with my DroidX. It does Macro well!
