Rainy Day Hike

When the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy advertises a public hike, we need to show up no matter the weather. As it turned out, we only had Stewards show up. We could have gone home but every one of us was looking forward to enjoying the desert in the rain! (My trusty Canon SX1 did a good job of capturing the morning).

Snow in the Preserve

More photos from Sunday’s snow appearance. We went out very early knowing it would melt quickly once the sun came up. Because we were trying to see all our favorite areas covered in snow, we moved quickly which meant shooting mostly handheld at a high ISO. Noise was easy to get rid of but the color balance still needs work. I’ll blame it on my monitor since it’s past time to calibrate 🙂

Stomping Ground

Here’s a view from our favorite stomping ground over to our second favorite stomping ground. All within minutes of our house. Love AZ 🙂 CLICK HERE to see a larger version.

Milkweed Seeds

On a hike yesterday, we came across a huge Rambling Milkweed vine which made me think about how much fun it is to photograph the seedpods once they burst open. Can’t wait to do it again! Here’s a shot from last year. Captured with a Lensbaby.

They Came From….

During a recent hike with a friend on a dark, overcast day, we rounded a corner and saw this scene. My friend saw dead Cholla while I saw creatures from Outer Space 🙂

Revised Forecast

Two days ago, NOAA forecast snow down to 2000ft. Yesterday afternoon it revised to 3000ft (we’re at 2500). I’m still holding out hope for a snow covered Saguaro but now I’ll need to drive a little north of here. So…here’s another shot from December 1998. (scanned from slide)

Ready? Set? SNOW!

I’m SO excited at the prospect of snow tomorrow night! The last time we had a couple of inches (in our area) that stayed long enough to photograph was in December 1998 which is when this image was taken. (scanned from slide) If we’re lucky enough to get this much again, I’m going to try to duplicate this image. The bad news is that all the plants that have spring up in the warmth of the past month are going to get knocked back down 🙁

Mitigation

Lots of trail work needed to mitigate some deep ruts on the mountain bike course of the McDowell Sonoran Challenge. (The ruts were caused by motorbikes which are no longer allowed). The event is January 29, 2011 so time’s a wastin’ as they say!

MSC Stewards hard at work.
