They Came From….
During a recent hike with a friend on a dark, overcast day, we rounded a corner and saw this scene. My friend saw dead Cholla while I saw creatures from Outer Space 🙂

Two days ago, NOAA forecast snow down to 2000ft. Yesterday afternoon it revised to 3000ft (we’re at 2500). I’m still holding out hope for a snow covered Saguaro but now I’ll need to drive a little north of here. So…here’s another shot from December 1998. (scanned from slide)

I’m SO excited at the prospect of snow tomorrow night! The last time we had a couple of inches (in our area) that stayed long enough to photograph was in December 1998 which is when this image was taken. (scanned from slide) If we’re lucky enough to get this much again, I’m going to try to duplicate this image. The bad news is that all the plants that have spring up in the warmth of the past month are going to get knocked back down 🙁

Holiday lights drive-bys last night. Love the Saguaros wrapped in lights!

Teddy Bear Cholla transform after death. Reincarnation, maybe? Let’s just say I wouldn’t want to be hiking the desert at night 🙂

This past Sunday, I assisted MSC Steward Dave Lorenz on his “Life of a Saguaro” hike. As we were leaving one of his lecture stops, I spotted a possible framing opportunity in these two giant Saguaro. Having a camera with an articulating screen (Canon SX1) allowed me to hold the camera at arms length and and yet still be able to line up the Saguaro in the distance. I then just waited for the hikers to go by and fired off several frames. Cool!
