Home Depot Hedgehog

I rescued this Hedgehog from Home Depot. It was under a bench with a price tag of a few dollars and it looked nearly beyond help. I had no idea what color the bloom would be but I felt sorry for it and took it home. To my delight, the blooms are an amazing soft pink! I used a filter called Pixel Bender on it to give it even more softness.

Spring Memories

An infrared capture from the Spring of 2008. What caught my eye first in this scene was the huge Chainfruit Cholla Skeleton (fire). I positioned myself low in order to include Poppies in the foreground and a nice Saguaro specimen in the background.(False color introduced by swapping channels.)

Prickly Poppy

A friend and I hiked a favorite canyon a couple of days ago and were so disappointed with the low amount of flower displays this year. This particular place is usually loaded with Southwestern Prickly Poppies which are especially fun to photograph because they are so large. Today I’m posting a Prickly Poppy captured in Infrared up at the Grand Canyon last year. I played with the image channels to introduce some false color.

Canyon Tree Frog

Yesterday, I led fellow wanna-be botanists Judi and Joyce and our birder friend Phil on a hike to Camp Creek Falls. What a day! Wildflowers were few and very far between but having Phil along, we were able to further our bird education. Thanks Phil! Besides the flowers, birds and waterfall, another highlight was coming across a Canyon Tree Frog. It jumped just as Phil walked by or we wouldn’t have seen the little 2 1/2 inch guy. Click here for my last sighting of this tiny creature. L-R: Joyce, Canyon Tree Frog, Judi

Greasewood Flat

An infrared HDR capture of the entrance to Greasewood Flat….a famous hangout for bikers (as well as families) and a really fun place to photograph! Although there is a lot of grease in their food (good, though!), the name doesn’t refer to that. Greasewood is a common name for the Creosote Shrub. (There’s another species of shrub nicknamed Greasewood but it doesn’t grow in our area.)

Let’s Meetup

A successful photography Meetup for our digital club yesterday! We started at the General Store and then moved to Greasewood Flat all the while encountering endless photo ops. The last stop was supposed to be Pinnacle Peak Patio but most had either run out of pixels or got lost. I went but stayed just long enough to get this photo.

High Key Sunflower

Another sunflower view. This time converted to black and white and texture added.

Trail Building

Great hike on the Go John trail in the Cave Creek Regional Park yesterday morning. Our goal was to view wildflowers but the last two cold snaps have held them back so we only saw the promise of things to come. It was a great 5mi plus hike anyway! I hadn’t been out there in several years and was pleasantly surprised by all the trail improvements. We were all talking about how trail building was done when we rounded a corner and saw this narrow bulldozer. Pretty cool!
