Breakfast for Butterflies

This is an old image I updated by adding textures. The butterfly was photographed at the Butterfly Pavilion at the Desert Botanical Garden. The garden no longer houses as many varieties as in past years. They now mostly have Monarchs. Still fun to see but not as exciting.

Red Tailed Hawk Juveniles

I spotted these sitting atop a Palo Verde tree near my front door! They stayed just long enough for me to run in and grab a camera. My exposure wasn’t the best but with added textures and processing, I really like how it turned out. Either way, a great memory 🙂

Glided Flicker Textured

This female Gilded Flicker was so engrossed in eating she didn’t mind me moving in for a closer look. I noticed she had a crooked beak but it didn’t seem to hinder her eating. Spicebush Swallowtail Textured

I’ve been re-working some of my images adding textures for a painterly look.

Thistle Textured

I enjoy photographing dried plants almost as much as live ones especially when they have great seed heads. I thought this image would look good with added textures and was happy to find one that looked a little like grasses. (check out more of my photos on my G+ page. Harris Hawk Juvenile

This Harris’ Hawk was very noisy which probably means he is a juvenile. I learned that young ones will call and complain just like they used to do in the nest when they wanted to be fed. They hunt in family groups and we’re very lucky to see them regularly. In fact, when I first got the outside enclosures for the cats, we had a couple of Harris Hawks land close to check them out! I was afraid they might be able to lift the enclosure but they just looked and flew away.

I added some textures to this because the sky was boring.

Fun with Daddy Long Legs

I led a meetup to see the Big Bugs at the Desert Botanical Garden this morning. Even though the light was great, my photos were kind of boring so I decided to have a little fun with the Daddy Longs Legs. I added some textures and text to make him the star of a horror film 🙂

Cicada Art

This week, I conducted an Elements 10 class explaining Layer Masks and showing the fun things you can create with them. This Cicada was one of the textured images I showed. I photographed this Cicada on concrete and then added two textures. Very easy and I think he looks great 🙂
