Thoughts of Fall

I’m hosting two meetups in Sedona next month and the big question is “Will we see color?!”. The answer is we won’t know til we get there. Stories are coming in from friends that fall color is late in Colorado so it might be late here too. If there’s no color, though, you can make your own with the help of photo software. These Oak leaves started as a pale shade of yellow/brown until I manipulated them with gradient maps, H/S, flipping, inverting, merging, compositing…..in other words….the hard way. I’m not poo-pooing apps….I just don’t have an iPhone/iPad and all the fun apps to play with 🙂

Cutleaf Coneflower Art

I’m hoping to find Cutleaf Coneflower in bloom on our upcoming road trip to Flagstaff. This photo was taken on the Schultz Pass trail last year about this time. The background was pretty boring so I played it up by adding various textures. It made a fun print!

Rocky Mountain Iris

When I photographed this scene, it was glaringly bright so I knew it wouldn’t make a good print. But the flowers were wonderful so I shot anyway figuring I’d have a good memory of it. I also had in mind playing with the image in various creative software with hopes I could rescue it. Topaz Simplify did a great job toning down extreme hightlights. I adjusted just to the point where the super bright highlights disappeared. I then applied Nik Glamour Glow to soften even more and bump up the color. Still not great so I decided to try Dynamic Auto Painter on it. I love this software because it allows you to save your creation as layers for future work. Voila! Fun process 🙂

Thicket Hairstreak

There were lots of Thicket Hairstreak as well as many other tiny butterflies on the wonderful Viet Springs trail last week. Rarely sitting still for long, they’re a challenge to photograph. I applied art filters to disguise the very busy background.

Tlaquepaque Chapel


I try to capture this cross a little differently each time we go to Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Villiage. This time I decided to add a texture to the image giving it a late day look.

Echinopsis Hybrid Round Two

My Echinopsis Torch cactus continues to bloom and yesterday morning, four more large showy flowers appeared. I haven’t played in Photoshop for awhile so here is a creation resulting from multiple filters. The two filters that contributed most to this look are Topaz Detail (Lithograph) and Redfield Fractalius. I started with presets but then created custom settings for each filter.

River Eggs

Roots hanging over the bank of Oak Creek – Topaz enhanced. These river rocks looked like eggs hidden among the roots. Probably not chocolate 🙂

Home Depot Hedgehog

I rescued this Hedgehog from Home Depot. It was under a bench with a price tag of a few dollars and it looked nearly beyond help. I had no idea what color the bloom would be but I felt sorry for it and took it home. To my delight, the blooms are an amazing soft pink! I used a filter called Pixel Bender on it to give it even more softness.
