Elephant Head

These Elephant Head are (hands down) the coolest wildflowers I encountered on my 2003 trip to Colorado. I’ll definitely be looking for them again but we might be too early. I’m sure there will be plenty to photograph, though 🙂

Colorado Wildflowers on my Mind

We typically go to Colorado for fall color but we’ll be searching for wildflowers soon! Our last summer trip was 2003.

Animas Forks Cabin

High Dynamic Range was the only way to capture the extreme contrasts of this mid day shot of a cabin at Animas Forks Ghost Town in Colorado. To further contribute to the art look, I added a couple of textures and then used the Oil Paint setting in Pixel Bender.

Basque Arborglyphs

Arborglyhps were a form of communication between Basque Sheepherders as they blazed their way West. Although I can’t be sure this is actually one of their marks, many are quite detailed.

Basque Sheepherders

There are areas long Last Dollar Road where the Aspen trees are full of really interesting markings. The markings, known as Arborglyphs, were left by Basque Sheepherders who used the trees to communicate with other sheepherders as they were traveling through the West. Most markings have scarred over so you can’t make out the design but if you’re lucky, you can find some that are quite ornate.

Infrared Aspens

I shot some Infrared in Colorado too. Here’s one of my favorites.

Colorado Road Trip

My Droidx captures the road through the RV windshield. To create this montage, I added a section of map showing our route and a couple of textures.

Red Mountain Mining Camp

My Oct 3rd blog post incorrectly identified this area as Red Mountain Ghost Town. Although this area was part of the Red Mountain Mining complex, it is actually an abandoned mining camp that was inhabited up until the early 70s. The camp is located just off the road at Red Mountain Pass above Ouray. To give the image an aged feel, I added 3 textures.
