sentinels

Saguaro Cactus have been nicknamed The Sentinels of the Desert and it’s easy to see why. This morning we did a 5 1/2 mile hike through a forest of these amazing cactus and learned all about them thanks to our MSC hike leader, Dave Lorenz. One of the most fascinating things is that the Saguaro seed is smaller than a poppy seed! We don’t see many baby Saguaros because of the extraordinary set of circumstances that have to exist in order for them to germinate.

John W. Sparbel

I received an email last night saying photographer friend, John Sparbel died yesterday. It’s a shock. I was told he recently had heart surgery which surprised many of who didn’t even know he was ill. He wasn’t much older than me.
Everyone who knew John remembers him as an excellent photographer but also as an extremely active, positive person who was always smiling. John and his wife Connie have traveled the world for many years and during the last couple of years have worked hard on putting their travels into books. Click the cover above or the link below to find his list of books at Blurb. We’ll miss you John.

McDowell Mountains

I shot 39 vertical images to create this panorama of the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale, Arizona. When and if the preservation goal can be reached, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve will cover one third of Scottsdale. Pretty cool!
