Lots of Hedgehog Cactus in bloom right now. Mostly magenta but here’s a pink bloom.

hedgehog sp.
Not all 8 buds made it to full bloom so this is a shot of the last pink Hedgehog bloom. The glow in the center is the result of strong sunlight coming from behind the cactus. Then, as if cued to appear, here comes a bug 🙂
Echinocereus sp.
I planted this hybrid Hedgehog about a year ago and this is the first time it’s bloomed. A real feat considering the Javelinas that come through every evening! The bloom is much smaller than our native Hedgehogs and it’s a beautiful shade of pink. I have high hopes for the other 8 buds. Stay tuned 🙂
hedgehog cactus
Same Hedgehog Cactus as the other day. You can tell when I’m busy 🙂
hedgehog
With our rainfall level so far, this beautiful specimen of Hedgehog Cactus is likely to be filled with blooms this coming April!
echinocereus
The common name is Hedgehog but this is not the local native so I have no idea what color or how large the bloom will be. I’m guessing it will be something showy but of course I’ll post a photo of whatever it is when it shows up.

Echinocereus engelmannii
Echinocereus engelmannii….rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?! And yet, I can remember this one because it has the most striking flowers of all the cactus, I think. Many are near fuchsia, a color which Wikipedia describes as Electric Magenta. This is especially fitting when they’re backlit.
