What appear to be very large red spines on this Mexican Fencepost are in actuality only between 1/16th and 1/4th of an inch. Pretty good photo considering I’m shooting hand held with my Canon S5. Many Canon point and shoots have a “Super Macro” mode that lets you get incredibly close.

cal poly arboretum
We went to Cal Poly’s Arboretum on our last day in California. It’s been a fun week but we look forward to getting back to the heat, believe it or not 🙂
(I forgot to write down the name of this flower)
bee
Flowers are still showing up! This weekend it was the Echinopsis huascha (aka red torch cactus) and it was loaded with blooms. I took one document shot (below) and then switched to my macro lens to capture this bee. (180 macro with 500D added. ISO 400 wide open. Handheld)
Microseris
There are a small dandelion-like plants in the Sonoran Desert called Microseris. They are members of the sunflower family. This variety is probably Lindley’s Silver Puff. A lensbaby macro shot reveals how beautiful the seed head is.
Phacelia
There are a couple of varieties of Phacelia in our area. The flowers range in color from pale lavendar blue to dark purple. I’m fairly sure the one above is Phacelia distans but I’ve given up trying to identify! I just call them all Celia and then remember the “fa” part 🙂 Beautiful name for a beautiful flower.
White Poppy
White poppy seen through a Canon 180 macro lens.
Cloe
A handheld shot to show how well point and shoot cameras do with macro photography. ISO 80, f2.7, 1/40th second with a Canon S5 IS. Can’t get any sharper than this!
Lantana
Not wildflowers but these Lantana may be a sign of wild blooms to come!
I’ll be thinking about macro photography during my test this morning 🙂
Moss
Exploring moss with a macro lens while holding an umbrella.
I would venture to guess that most people don’t think of moss and
Arizona as being compatible but this resides on a granite boulder by
our driveway. In summer, you’d think it was completely dead but just
a little rain and it springs to life. Can’t wait to go exploring here again!
Bundle up
Clothing is this month’s photo assignment in one of my groups. This jacket has a felted shearling lining that is so toasty warm! I used a macro lens and available window light.
