candy barrel

Native Candy Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus wislizeni) are a rewarding cactus to have in your garden.
I planted 4 about three years ago not knowing exactly what bloom colors I’d get and was lucky
to get yellow, orange and red/orange. Here’s a close-up of the red/orange that’s in half bloom.

It’s always a treat to find a full circle of flowers and I have hope for the one in the photo below.
It’s similar in color to the one above but maybe a little deeper. The Verbena was a bonus that
I didn’t notice in the pot with the cactus. It’s not our native gooddingii but I let it stay 🙂

camera shy bobcats

We’re so lucky to be able to see as much wildlife as we do. I’ve successfully photographed
Mule Deer, Javelina, Coyote, Raptors, Birds, Quail, flower eating lizards and more but even
though we have many Bobcats up here, I have yet to get a really good portrait. I run for my
camera as quickly as possible but usually catch their backsides 🙂

Here’s another Bobcat captured a couple of days ago.

The only reason I was able to get a second photo was that he was waiting for a hiker to go by!

They see us a lot more than we see them :-)

Another goal is a photo of Mountain Lion which are frequently seen in our area. There are plenty
of deer and Javelina for them to feed on but I’m still nervous hiking very early or late in the day!

tuesday tips

To keep up with digital news, one of the blogs I follow is Imaging Insider. Truthfully, I’ve come close
to deleting it from my feeds because there’s not enough time in the day to read or watch everything
on that site but they do have one segment I enjoy and often find useful.

It’s called Daily Watch: Tips/Tutorials/Photographers. Sometimes the tips and tutorials are old stuff
(can be amusing to watch) but many times there is a lot of very useful information.

Here’s a link to today’s segment:

Here’s the RSS link if you want to follow the site.

Beware, though! You may see over 100 new items on that feed tomorrow 🙂
(I use my down arrow key to fast forward)

A fast way to find all of their Daily Watch segments is to enter the following string in Google:

the general store

A few miles down the hill from us is The General Store. A somewhat historical building since it was the
first store built up here. It’s now surrounded by three shopping centers and has changed hands over
the years but it’s still full of charm and a wonderful photo op! I haven’t shot Infrared in awhile so on
my way to Home Depot yesterday, I decided to run in and take some quick shots.

For all the photographers who follow my blog….this trail has spectacular views of the McDowell
Mountains and includes excellent specimens of desert cacti and flora. You won’t be disappointed!
The trail is 6 feet wide which allows plenty of room for people to pass you while you’re shooting.

roasting jojoba nuts

I spent yesterday afternoon harvesting and then roasting Jojoba nuts. Click here for instructions.

2009_08_15

As mentioned in the above link, eating too many will result in a stomach ache so I divide them
into small bags that I can throw in my backpack. The tiny bags can be purchased at craft stores.

I’ve read articles claiming Jojoba nuts have properties that can curb your appetite which is
why I started snacking on them in the first place. So far it sure it hasn’t work for me…darn it 🙂

feline friday

It’s time for another adventure with Cleo and Cloe. This time: The Drinking Fountain.
These fountains are great but it didn’t last long. Cloe was determined to figure out where the
water was coming from which lead to turning it over several times a week. She’s a clever one.

Since not everyone likes cats, I’m also including a photo from yesterday. Native barrel cactus are
blooming so keep your eye out this next week for colors ranging from pale yellow to bright orange/red.
Tech info: Hand held, Canon 180mm Macro lens, ISO 400, f/6.7, 1/350th, +.5 exp comp.

And now without further ado….Here’s Cleo and Cloe 🙂

delay the delete

Today I’m sharing an image I captured 9 years ago. I almost deleted it back then because it was
so underexposed but I loved the scene so I decided to save with the hope that one day I’d spend
time on it. My editing skills have improved since then so it didn’t take long to get a good result.

I like it!

I think I will start doing what many suggest and that’s to wait to a month or two or maybe more
before making deletions. My tastes in photography have changed in the last 10 years and I cringe
at what I’ve thrown away. Especially all the accidental camera movement in photos that I now love.
