feline friday

It’s time for another adventure with Cleo and Cloe. This time: The Drinking Fountain.
These fountains are great but it didn’t last long. Cloe was determined to figure out where the
water was coming from which lead to turning it over several times a week. She’s a clever one.

Since not everyone likes cats, I’m also including a photo from yesterday. Native barrel cactus are
blooming so keep your eye out this next week for colors ranging from pale yellow to bright orange/red.
Tech info: Hand held, Canon 180mm Macro lens, ISO 400, f/6.7, 1/350th, +.5 exp comp.

  1. The storm clouds are beautiful. Did you take the shots near your house? Cute kitties too. Are the cactus blooming in many areas? I haven’t seen any in bloom yet. You are the expert – how long will the blooms last? I’ve love cactus blooms and you’ve captured that beauty.

  2. Thanks, Shirley! The storm clouds were shot from an upstairs window at my house. I live in far NE Scottsdale and we seem to get more rain up here…lucky for my new landscaping 🙂

As for our native cactus…what we have the most of in the desert around us is Ferocactus wislizenii but other barrel species are blooming too. Their bloom period is typically July-Sept but August seems to be the best month. It’s of course a hot time to be hiking and since the blooms usually wait until late morning to open, it’s bound to be hot but barrels are often as close as the side of the road. I slammed my brakes on for one I saw last month that had a full crown of flowers. I did have to hop a barb wire fence but it was worth it! Besides the deserts areas in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Tucson’s Sabino Canyon is great place to photograph barrel cactus. Again….this is the month to go.
