Two Gambel’s Quail families in the yard last night. This tiny chick was one of 14!
The other family only had two. It’s a tough life. Snakes, roadrunners and gila monsters love to snack on them 🙁

bath time
Don’t let Cloe’s face fool you. She loves water!
Check out Cleo in the background waiting his turn 🙂
They complain a little but all in all are unbelievably cooperative.
(thanks to Chris for taking the photos)
summer
Summer officially starts today. What does this photo have to do with that?
Nothing but you’re supposed to have fun during summer, right? This is a start 🙂
moon illusion
Last night we witnessed a summer moon illusion. The illusion is that it appears extra large.
My question is if everyone sees it (including astronauts) isn’t real? 🙂

bird feeder
Sparrows enjoying Saguaro fruit.
hot
Yes, it’s hot this week. We had 106 but the valley had 112!
We, the cats and desert adapted plants (like this variegated agave) are hanging in there.
bobcat butts
We have a lot of wildlife up here and I’ve had luck capturing many animals but not Bobcats!
Almost every photo I have is of their butt as they’re leaving. Last night was no exception.
I’ll have another chance but will I be ready? Probably not 🙂
(captured through the kitchen window with a Canon S5)
saguaro fruit
When Saguaro fruit is ripe, it literally explodes. This spews seeds everywhere. We’ve never witnessed it but I keep trying to catch it. The fruit is delicious and to this day is harvested by the Tohono O’odham. As you might imagine, it’s very difficult to reach. Click here to learn more about the process.
Or click here for an excellent video of the process.
Follow-up: Our mouths were watering after viewing the video so Chris found an old tree stake just long enough to knock off a few fruits. They were delicious! We’ll be eating more in the next week 🙂
killer tomatoes
Our favorite tomatoes (vine type and cherry tomatoes) turn out not to be included in the
salmonella scare so I felt safe buying these yesterday. I thought about it briefly, though,
because it was Friday the 13th 🙂
Shortly after taking this photo, I ate two with some blue cheese dressing (yum!).
This morning I’m fine. Whew!
who’s watching who
Who is watching who? Either way, it’s fun watching them interact 🙂
(Same lizard as yesterday. Captured with Canon S5)
