Two images from my current trip to Escalante. Internet is close to dial-up so not much text today.

road trip review
Here’s a view of our road trip route. Ten awesome days of photography, hiking and biking.
This trip was all about me (thanks Chris!). Our goal was finding rock art sites I hadn’t
photographed which made it a fun treasure hunt. Some sites were fairly easy to get to
but some were in beautiful remote canyons which were great to explore.
Cleo and Cloe (no H) really love road trips and, like us, can’t wait for the next one 🙂
window seat
Friday was mostly a travel day. Here are some drive by shots.
Viewpoint on Moki Dugway Monument Valley to the right. Valley of the Gods on left.
San Juan river at San Juan, Utah I stayed there during a workshop once.
Hwy 163 toward Monument Valley. Shot into sun through a dirty windshield
rainy day photos
Tuesday was a rainy day but we did have about two hours of shooting time in the morning.
The first three images are from Courthouse Wash in Arches National Park.
The next two were captured with a Lensbaby in Sand Dune Arch in Arches National Park.
And here is a Jerusalem Cricket! This guy is huge! They’re usually only out at night but
I think the rain might have flooded him out. We’d never seen one so it was a real treat!
(spotted on a parking lot in Arches)
a phototographers dream day
First I get up, walk out the door, walk a minute and I’m staring at Oak Creek. Ahhh. Here’s anotherr reflection:
A short drive north and we encounter the best fall color in years at the West Fork Trail!
Then heading toward Utah, we stop in Bluff and I get to see the famous flute playing sheep! Sand Island Petroglyphs
Finally at our campground (see our cute RV), we get a glimpse of what we might expect all next week.
Look at the Cottonwoods!
No internet connection tomorrow and possibly the next but stay tuned for more photos.
ghost town road trip
Searching for ghost towns, we encounter some extraterrestrials 🙂
Oatman, Arizona was exactly what we hoped for although we arrived late so the mules had left. We’re going back.
condor sighting
After many trips to the Grand Canyon, I finally saw a Condor! My trusty little Canon SX10 brought
him in for a closer view. I noticed the hikers in the background and moved till I got this fun shot.
The Condor wasn’t really looking at them but it looks like it doesn’t it? He was just preening 🙂
Canon SX10 zoomed in to equivalent of 560mm. A super sunny day allowed for a fast shutterspeed.
During the middle of the day, I’ve been enjoying playing with HDR. Here are two more images.
Sycamore on Oak Creek – 3 shot HDR – Because of wind, the leaves were overlapping so I applied Topaz Simplify.
Grand Canyon Train – 3 shot HDR shot with Lensbaby G3.
While I’m sightseeing, resting and playing in Photoshop, Chris is hiking Rim to Rim to Rim with a couple of friends.
Note that the link describes the trip as taking 5 or more days. Chris is doing it in two. Different strokes 🙂
apache plume
We saw many flowers on our road trip but my favorite by far was Apache Plume.
The rose-like flowers are beautiful but the plume seed heads are gorgeous and fascinating!
Below are some of my favorite shots.
Macro shot (cropped) of an Apache Plume bloom with a Flower Fly captured from about 2 feet away.
Canon 24-105mm at 105mm w/500D close-up. I shot at f/8 which renders a soft background with a long lens.
Macro shot of the amazing seed head. I could have spent the afternoon photographing them!
Approx. same settings as previous
Wider shot of shrubs full of plumes.
Blooms in the shade. This Apache Plume was tree-like so it must have been very old.
Here’s a shot of an Apache Plume in the middle of a Lava Field at Sunset Crater in Flagstaff.
road trip!
Sedona for a couple of days; then Flagstaff for a few and finally a few days at the Grand Canyon.
Cleo has been looking forward to this for awhile. Surprisingly, he and Cloe love road trips as much as we do!
road trip….day three
Hacienda Desierto in Tucson was our next Bed and Breakfast. Fabulous grounds but breakfast was not worth writing about. However, my friends did get to see a Javelina up close and personal, a Roadrunner taking a bath and a hummingbird in her nest right outside their door!
San Xavier del Bac Mission was our first stop today. We found out that the scaffolding was going back up in a couple of months so we were happy to have lucked into this time period. The backside still had some of the scaffolding.
Next stop…Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. Tough midday light so I’m only including two critter shots.
Finally….we met my friend Jim H. who led us to one of his favorite sunset locations in Saguaro National Monument. Thanks again, Jim!
