This is the time of year when you can see some really cool bugs if you just look for them. I’m guessing this is some kind of Blister Beetle. I captured him using my Canon SX 1 with the screen practically touching him.

This is the time of year when you can see some really cool bugs if you just look for them. I’m guessing this is some kind of Blister Beetle. I captured him using my Canon SX 1 with the screen practically touching him.

We saw several of this large Arizona Blister beetle (Lytta magister) this weekend and my little Canon S5 (with its swivel screen) did an excellent job of capturing it. FYI: It can be as large at 1 1/8 inches. The adults eat plant tissue but the larva munch on grasshopper eggs in the soil.

This ant-like beetle is working hard collecting pollen from a Desert Chicory.
Follow-up…In looking at my other photos and trying to identify this beetle, I realized that he wasn’t collecting pollen. He was eating the plant and getting covered with pollen in the process!
