Did you do this with the camera or software?
Both would be my first guess. Was wondering if camera
movement was the main source?

Thanks for the feedback Ken! Although I might use software to add contrast, the effect is achieved totally in-camera as a result of intentional camera movement. I love shooting this way because the results are always a surprise!
