The Gateway Trailhead for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is on schedule with an opening promised
at the beginning of May. Most impressive about the Gateway area is
how little impact construction has had on the environment. If a plant or
rock had to be moved, it was replaced nearby.

rammed earth
The Gateway Trailhead for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is well under way. It’s being built with rammed earth walls using materials from the excavation of the site. How very green! The entire project is indeed very green and the brainchild of acclaimed architect Phil Weddel. It’s a fascinating process to watch.

Gateway to the Preserve
A parking area to the Gateway access of the Preserve could be ready by the end of October. Very exciting for hikers. This shot was taken yesterday during a preview of the trailhead construction.
