desert spiny lizard

Did you know lizards love to eat flowers? This is the second time I’ve been lucky enough to see it.
The first time I saw this behavior was at the Desert Museum in Tucson when I saw a small Iguana eating
Passion flowers. The guy below is one of many Desert Spiny Lizards who live in our backyard.
The shrub is a Little Leaf Cordia which is also very popular with Verdins and House Finches.

  1. Wow!! You deserve to be “lucky”!! What an awesome video. I have never seen a lizard eat flowers and I really thank you for sharing that video. It was a great treat. 🙂

  2. Thanks Carol! One of my goals is to document the critters in my yard with video using my 5DMKII but while I’m still working, the Canon SX10 is much more convenient. I think it does a darn good job! The best part is not having to change lenses.

  3. Yes! The SX10 does an outstanding job. As soon as my move is done, I am going to learn how to do the video thing. I can hardly wait.

  4. You must have been thrilled to have captured this lizard. I could feel your excitement through the video.

Thanks for sharing. I loved it.

  5. Wow, that lizard is huge! This is amazing footage of him gobbling up your flowers. That is so cool you got to see it, and actually film it is even better. (some of us know this as the ‘toilet paper bush’, sorry….)
The kittens and the paper bag that follow are wonderful, too.

  6. Toilet paper bush?! That’s really funny. It’s a common name I hadn’t heard. So did it get that name because the blooms get all over everything like when someone T-Ps a house of tree? Thinking about it, that’s probably it 🙂

Thanks for sharing that tidbit 🙂

  7. I was fortunate enough to learn about this, and see it, in the Galapagos Islands. Your videos are so good. Thanks for sharing. Maybe I should get my video camera back from my kids.
