Great Horned Owl

Posted in birds, desert, desert fauna, hiking by Administrator on the October 4th, 2008

During the first MSC public hike of the season this morning, a hiker in our group spotted a Great Horned Owl. An expert in our group surmised that the owl had been startled out of his tree by a mountain biker earlier which caused him to leave the tree he uses for daytime sleep. He was now just waiting for all us annoying hikers to leave so he could return. Check out the photo below which shows how sharp-eyed the hiker was!

Check out Moo cards if you haven’t already. Above is their mini moo card. The minimum order is 100 but you can have 100 different photos! How cool is that?! To top that off, you get 6 lines of text on the back. (text has to be the same on all cards). I have also ordered their greeting cards and the quality is excellent. Again, you can have a different photo on each card.

Unidentified….for the moment only. I just haven’t had a chance to look it up. This flower is like so many tiny, pretty flowers that come up in disturbed soil. This was by the road next to the house.

Identity discovered: Scarlet Spiderling. What a great name!

Another HDR of the license plates at Greasewood Flat. A little less processing on this one. Below is what a normal exposure would be.

Gateway to the Preserve

A parking area to the Gateway access of the Preserve could be ready by the end of October. Very exciting for hikers. This shot was taken yesterday during a preview of the trailhead construction.

Scouting for a photo of the day

Walking around the house quickly to find something to post today, I notice a small white spot on a little Mesquite I just planted. The super macro setting on my Canon S5 revealed an alien creature :-)
